Ellis Island is a student-created Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) that explores immigrant experiences in New York City during the early 1900s. Players will create and follow the course of a single non-American character entering the U.S. through Ellis Island. They will have to make a life for themselves with their resources at hand: friends or relatives they may know, money they carried over, or background skills that could help them get a job.
Directed by Professor Celia Pearce, the project is mainly managed, designed and produced by undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of backgrounds. The team is broken in three departments: art, design and programming. All three groups work closely together to create a cohesive, engaging experience that mirrors the life of an immigrant during the time period. The team for the Spring 2012 semester is as follows:
